The conjunction occurs when two planets occupy the same degree of the zodiac, within a certain orb (usually 8-10° for the luminaries, less for the other planets). It is the most powerful and immediate of all aspects, because the two planets are literally in the same place, acting together as a single force.
The conjunction is traditionally considered a neutral aspect — neither harmonious nor disharmonious by nature. Its quality depends entirely on the planets involved. A conjunction of Venus and Jupiter is generally considered favorable, blending the benefic qualities of both planets. A conjunction of Mars and Saturn is generally considered difficult, blending the malefic qualities of both. The key is that the conjunction fuses — the two planets cannot be separated, and they express themselves as a unit.
When interpreting a conjunction, consider:
- The nature of the planets — benefic, malefic, or neutral?
- The sign placement — is the conjunction in a sign where either planet is dignified?
- The house placement — in which area of life does the fusion express itself?
