Sun, Moon, Rising, houses and aspects in plain language

Your Sun sign describes your core identity and how you shine. Your Moon sign describes your emotional nature and what makes you feel safe. Your Rising sign, or Ascendant, is the sign on the eastern horizon when you were born and describes how you come across to others.

The twelve houses divide the sky into areas of life such as home, work and relationships, and the aspects are the angles between planets that show how their energies combine. Explore any placement or aspect in more depth in the astrology encyclopedia.

Frequently asked questions

What is a birth chart?

A birth chart, or natal chart, is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. It shows the zodiac sign of the Sun, Moon and planets, the twelve houses, and the angles, or aspects, between the planets.

Do I need my exact birth time?

For the most accurate chart, yes. Your rising sign and houses depend on the exact time, and the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so even a few hours change its degree. If you do not know your birth time, noon is a common placeholder: the planets' signs will be reliable, but the houses and rising sign will not be.

What are the Big Three?

The Big Three are your Sun sign, your Moon sign and your Rising sign, also called the Ascendant. Together they describe your core identity, your emotional nature and the way you come across to others. The calculator shows all three at the top of your chart insights.

Which house system does the calculator use?

Placidus by default. In Settings you can switch to any of 13 systems: Placidus, Regiomontanus, Koch, Porphyry, Alcabitius, Whole Sign, Equal, Campanus, Topocentric, Morinus, Vehlow Equal, Horizon and Zenith.

Can I include Uranus, Neptune and Pluto?

Yes. Turn on the outer planets in Settings to draw them on the wheel. The planetary positions, planetary influences and key aspects sections always include them, whether or not they are drawn on the wheel.

How do I download or share my chart?

Use the Download button to save your chart as a PNG, JPG or SVG image in standard, high or print resolution, with or without your birth details. Copy link gives you a short link that opens the same chart for anyone you send it to.

Is the birth chart calculator free?

Yes. It is free to use and needs no account or sign-up.
